Yakusugi Cedar Today
In August 2024, the Yayoi Cedar—an estimated 3,000-year-old Yakusugi tree standing in Shiratani Unsuikyo on Yakushima Island—was broken near its base by the strong winds of Typhoon No. 10, making national headlines. The fallen tree is now being preserved in place as an environmental education resource, and the trail was reopened in February 2025.
Furthermore, the last official auction of Yakusugi buried wood (domaiboku) took place in March 2019, bringing the public supply to a complete end. Yakusugi is now an extraordinarily rare timber, often called a “phantom wood.”
Our workshop carefully crafts each piece using Yakusugi timber that has been preserved over many years. We invite you to take this opportunity to experience the warmth and timeless history of Yakusugi cedar firsthand.
