Since moving to Kagoshima in 1965 and beginning Yakusugi craftsmanship with my brother-in-law, I have devoted over half a century to working with this precious wood.

I strive to create works that maximize the unique grain and fragrance of Yakusugi, handcrafting each piece with care.

As Vice Chairman of the Japan Traditional Wood Art Association and an artist listed in the Art Yearbook, I continue to share the beauty of Yakusugi craftsmanship with many people.

Career History

1943 Born in Umi-machi, Kasuya-gun, Fukuoka Prefecture
1958 Apprenticed to a sashimono (joinery) master
1965 Moved to Kagoshima and began Yakusugi craftsmanship with his brother-in-law
1972 Established workshop in Yoshida-cho, Kagoshima Prefecture — continues to this day

Philosophy

"Yakusugi cedar has survived for over a thousand years. Each tree holds within it the power and beauty of nature.

I strive to waste none of this precious material, creating works that bring out the maximum beauty of its grain.

My hope is to deliver pieces that will be cherished and passed down through generations."
