A Rare Encounter with Yakusugi Cedar
Yakushima Island was designated a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site in 1993 and celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2023. The island’s iconic Yakusugi cedar saw live tree harvesting end in 2001, and in March 2019, the last auction of buried wood (domaiboku) was held, making it a truly irreplaceable “phantom wood” that can no longer be newly obtained.
In August 2024, the approximately 3,000-year-old Yayoi Cedar was toppled by Typhoon No. 10—a powerful reminder of nature’s immense force.
Our workshop crafts each piece with care using precious Yakusugi timber that has been preserved over many years. We invite you to visit and experience the warmth of Yakusugi cedar, shaped over a thousand years of history.
